Chickweed (Stellaria Media)
Chickweed, another herb "dangerous" to perfect lawns.
- Chickweed is classified as a demulcent herb, which soothes, softens, and reduces irritations of the mucous membranes. Demulcents coat, shield, lubricate and soothes inflamed or abraded mucous membrane surfaces or tissues , from irritation substances. They relieve the pain from inflammations. It is also classified as an expectororant, which acts upon the broncho-pulmonary membrane, altering the quality, and increasing the quantity of its secretions. Expectorants facilitate the discharge of mucus matter.
- Chickweed brings the body into balance. Chickweed is excellent for skin afflictions, for abrasions, eruptions, itching, and hives. When applied as a poultice, it will remove the impurities of the skin.
- Chickweed can be used internally or externally. It can be made into ointments, oils, teas, or eaten raw or cooked. It is a tender herb which grows prolifically in any area, and seems to prefer shade to sun.
- Chickweed can benefit the whole system, as it soothes and cleanses, paving the way for healing of toxicity related problems, such as, poor circulation, psoriasis, lung inflammation, boils, and skin problems, such as acne.
- Chickweed is considered another weed we need to get rid of, so there are many noxious weed killers used to eradicate it from lawns. One would be better to raise chickweed and use it for it's benefits to the skin, than to try to destroy it.
- Every time we destroy one more plant or insect, we change the whole ecology of the environment. Why do we continue to grow lawns which do nothing to feed or heal humans? Lawns, which pollute the environment and waste our precious water. Lawns which are labor intensive? We could let nature take it's course, eliminate manicured lawns, and let nature feed and heal us.
- One of life's great mysteries: Humans work so hard at having the perfect landscape and lawn, and yet to find peace, they flee to the country and the wild woods. They find beauty in nature, that cannot be found in their perfect yards. Humans have ceased to grow vegetable gardens and work laboriously at producing a non -productive crop, a green, non- edible, non- usable, patch of grass. A patch of grass which costs hundreds of dollars to keep weed free, hundreds of hours in labor, and serves absolutely no purpose on this planet. Think about it.
