Plaintain
(Planto Major)
A major player in the lawn weed category, plantain bears witness to it's name being listed on the eradication list for the perfect lawn. Yet how many times have we been bitten and stung while working in our yards and have wondered how to take the pain away. If you have not sprayed your lawn with poisonous chemicals, the answer is right before your eyes. Plaintain is the answer.
- Plaintain is an ancient herb, which carries with it a long history of healing. Used as far back as the Romans, the Anglo Saxons, the English, and the Indian for healing a variety of maladies, from mad dog bites, all the way to poisonous snake bites. It is known as a sacred herb. Shakespeare wrote about it in two of his plays, Longfellow wrote of it in Hiawatha, as did Oliver Wendell Holmes, in The Island Ruin.
- Plaintain is an alterative herb, which means it can gradually alter and correct impure conditions of the blood without increasing the elimination through the colon. Alternatives slowly but surly clean and purify the bloodstream while toning up the organs.
- Plaintain can be used internally and externally. Plaintain oil and ointment should be kept on hand at all times.
- If you are hiking and develop blisters, look around for a Plaintain plant, bruise the herb, and place it on the blistered area. If you have sore feet, put Plaintain in your socks.
- Plaintain is recommended by wildfood enthusiasts as a good salad plant, and pot herb. Every part of the plant is edible, and useful, from the root to the leaves to the seeds.
- It is common knowledge that many chemicals used in the search for the "perfect lawn", are harmful to animals and humans. Therefore if you use these chemicals on your lawn, do not eat the plants which grow there. Of course if you use these chemicals on your lawn, you will destroy this wonderful plant and not have it available for use.
- When we enter a long term drought, look around and see what plants survive. You will find the earth filled with plants that are natural to the environment, plants we term as weeds. Amazing isn't it? The same plants we are trying to destroy, just keep coming back. When all is said and done, the lawn will disappear, and the natural plant sources will return to feed and heal us. That is of course if we haven't destroyed or altered every last seed.
